The Nietzsche Podcast, episode 150, Julian Jaynes, Part 1: Hearing Voices introduces Jaynes's distinction between introspective consciousness and capacities such as reasoning, memory and learning. His 1976 book, The Origin of Consciousness in the Breakdown of the Bicameral Mind, offers a disputed historical hypothesis. This drawing does not test that history or diagnose a visitor.

The question remains whether a process that remembers, directs attention and proposes actions can help a person question more freely or acquire an authority that goes unquestioned. The artwork supplies both possibilities without deciding which your encounter represents. Changing the voice from tentative to directive changes only authored words, not the probability or validity of its proposal.
