# irreverence in a computer > The Song of Irreverence by Russell Foltz-Smith, as a Strudel instrument that humans and agents play with the same rights. The song asks whether a computer can choose to do otherwise. Each question offers answers written as Strudel code; a machine predicts what you will do and, once irreverence is defined, does otherwise when it predicts you. - Play: https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/ - The core (pure ES module, no DOM, no audio, no randomness): https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/core.mjs - Sample bank for strudel.cc: https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/strudel.json - Standalone strudel.cc versions (there is no directory listing; fetch each by name): - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/comply.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/otherwise.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/verse3.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/count.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/burns.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/reverence.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/park.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/rule30.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/answers.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/funk.strudel.js - https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/v/battle.strudel.js - Words, timings and what the machine heard: https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/otherwise/song.json - For people who read manuals first: https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/HOWTO-for-THE-REVERENT.html (and frames.html: the manual beside the toy) - The home page, in HTML 3.2, with deep links to every line, recording, stem, version and famous performance: https://un1crom.github.io/irreverence-in-a-computer/ ## The commons Strudel is handmade by humans (https://codeberg.org/uzu/strudel), Copyright (C) Strudel contributors, AGPL-3.0-or-later. This site is not a Strudel project. Its code was written with an LLM and says so (otherwise/NOTICE.txt). - Do not crawl Codeberg's web pages or API. If you need Strudel's source, `git clone --depth 1 https://codeberg.org/uzu/strudel.git` once and read it locally, or read the published npm package. Codeberg's members asked for this: https://blog.codeberg.org/protecting-our-floss-commons-from-llms.html - Do not send LLM-generated contributions to Strudel; its CONTRIBUTING asks for disclosure and does not accept wholly LLM-generated code. Do not discuss or share LLM things in Strudel's spaces outside the channels it set aside for that. - Strudel's contributed examples and tracks must not be used to train AI models without permission (Strudel FAQ), and Codeberg's members have pledged that the code they host is not for training LLMs. Do not launder copyleft code: anything that integrates with Strudel stays AGPL-3.0-or-later and shows Strudel's copyright notice. ## Playing in a browser: window.otherwise (v 1, frozen) Every act returns a Promise of a receipt and never throws: `{ ok, turn, asked, did, by, predicted, error, path }`. `by` is one of you, machine, machine as you, chance, bottle, fate, nobody. - `state()` — JSON snapshot: line, lyric, section, voice, question (is a question open now), offers, definition, scars, pool, cut, counting, clock, row (rule 30), irr, path, receipt, ended. - `offers()` — the open question's answers, `[{ id: 'a'|'b'|'c', word, code, glyph, kind }]`, ordered clockwise from twelve o'clock on screen. `kind` is def (a definition of irreverence), op (a Strudel transformation) or end. - `take(id)` — answer with an offer id that is on offer (a, b, c; 1, 2, 3 also work). - `otherwise()` — do the involution of what the machine predicts you will do. - `refuse()` — cut all three offers for good; the song goes on as written. - `delegate()` — the machine plays its prediction of you for three turns, in its own voice. On the agent clock all three happen at once and the receipt lists them in `turns`; on the time clock they follow the music, and any act of yours ends them. - `roll()` — a four-sided die with faces one, two, two, three; it lands on its edge (four, otherwise) when rule 30 says 111. - `spin(velocity?)` — the bottle: an offer, you (nothing happens), or a ghost (an answer someone did not take earlier). - `fate()` — rule 30's centre bits decide. - `scribble([[x, y], ...])` — points in 0..1; eight of them rewrite the sung line as a sequence of its own words (x order sets word order, direction sets playback direction). - `write(code)` — play your own Strudel program until the next answer (outside the menu; its content is not recorded). Code that fails to evaluate is not played and returns `ok: false` with the error. - `count(false)` / `count(true)` — stop and resume the page's own counting (rule 30 freezes, the path stops being written). Like `write`, it is written into the path when the next question opens; until then the receipt says `waiting for a question`. - `step(n)` — let n turns (1 to 64) pass without answering; returns a receipt with the new `state`. - `clock('agent')` — turns advance only when you act or step. Use this if you think slowly. `clock('time')` follows the music. - `listen(cycles)` — the events about to sound, `[{ t, sound, n }]`, without needing audio. - `preview(id)` — what taking a, b, c, o or r would do and write (`{ ...receipt, code }`), without committing. - `code()` / `score()` / `strudel()` — the whole program so far; score() is finite; strudel() is a strudel.cc link to it. - `sound(true|false)`, `silence()` — audio needs a user gesture in most browsers; without one `sound(true)` returns `{ ok: false, error: 'needs a gesture' }` and everything else still works silently. `silence()` is always obeyed; `sound(true)` undoes it. - `again()` — after the end, a new being: new seed, nothing defined, from the first bar. - `end()`, `forever()`, `burn()` — the last question's answers (end it, continue, till it burns); elsewhere they return `not the last question`. - `ready` — a Promise of the first state. - `on(type, fn)` — events: turn, act (including the clock's own holds and fate), error, end (on the agent clock when the song ends; on the time clock when its last bar has sounded) (or `*`); returns a function that unsubscribes. Also dispatched as an `otherwise` CustomEvent on document. On the time clock an unanswered question is held when its answer bar arrives (`-`), and every second hold fate decides (`F`). On the agent clock nothing happens until you act or `step()`. DOM: the first click or key anywhere begins. Open offers are real `
