About this experiment

Two small worlds: a stage in perspective, with a lamp, a column, a screen and rolling balls, and a gas filmed as smoke. Each runs under its own laws, and each is also run by models that learned only from films of it. Drag the line across the picture to compare the world with a model. Step through how the model made the frame. Read what is happening and why, and click the picture to see where any spot came from.

The same two worlds with the arithmetic showing. The chalkboard under the picture works each step of the chosen model with this frame's numbers, and a click works one pixel by hand. The pieces are school mathematics: a matrix and a division for the camera, the quadratic formula for every ball, dot products for light, a least-squares line, the bell curve, Euler's method, counting. The programs compose them thousands of times per frame, and a separate check confirms that the chalkboard's numbers are the programs' own, byte for byte.
